Café Slavia is one of the most famous cafes in Prague. It was opened in 1884 and there have always been many artists among its visitors, which was also related to the fact that the café is on Národní třída directly opposite the National Theatre. Her name Slavia expresses the idea of Pan-Slavism, the idea of the unity of all Slavic countries. The café is also attractive in that not only the National Theatre but also the Vltava River, Charles Bridge, and Prague Castle can be seen from its windows.
After 1989, the café was closed for many years. In the meantime, many great cafés have been opened in Prague – either in new places or where there were cafés in the golden age of the First Republic (e.g. the Louvre Café).
